Newly Seeded Yard Instructions

You just had your lawn seeded; here are a few tips that should get your lawn off to a thick, healthy start. Initially, a little TLC goes a long way toward years of beauty and enjoyment.

Lawn Watering Instructions

The most important requirement for germinating turf grass seed is adequate moisture. Keeping the seed damp by rain or irrigation is critical to proper seed development. The seed should start germinating in 21-28 days with proper watering.

The first watering can be done right away. You should moisten the soil to a depth of ½” to 1” but applied gently. Be careful not to apply the water so it puddles or with such force that it washes away soil or dislodges the seed.

After the initial watering, irrigate the newly seeded area lightly and frequently. Watering should be done twice or thrice a day until the grass germinates. As the new grass begins to mature, watering frequency should be reduced, and the duration of each watering increased. Watering at night is not recommended.

Activity

Too much activity on your newly seeded lawn can interfere with seed germination. Please limit the activity on your lawn for the first 4-6 weeks.

Lawn Mowing

Your new grass will be ready to mow when the grass plants are higher than the height at which you normally mow. In other words, if you plan to regularly cut the lawn at 3 ½”, mow it for the first time when it is about 4” tall. It is a good idea to follow the rule of thumb of never removing more than ½ of the leaf blade at any one time. Also, do not mow if the ground is too wet.

Remember that a sharp mower blade is the most important requirement for proper mowing. A dull blade rips and shreds the grass instead of cutting it; new seedlings can be torn from the soil.

Warranty

Due to the weather conditions, we cannot guarantee the germination of the applied seed. Because we cannot control the weather or how much you water the applied seed, we cannot guarantee the success of this service. However, the seed we apply has a percent germination rate with proper watering. Please make sure you are following the proper watering instructions above. Green Earth Lawn Care is not responsible for damage to underground wires or sprinkler systems. Due to this, we must find out where or how deep objects may be underground. The MN Department of Industry recommends that all wires and sprinkler systems be at a depth of 12 inches.

A Final Note

A lawn is much like any other living thing. When properly nourished and cared for, it thrives. With adequate attention, the lawn we seeded today will provide a beautiful environment for you and your home for many years.
